SUMMARY:The Why\, Where\, When\, What and How Of Lineage & Hereditary Societies
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever thought of joining a Lineage or Hereditary Society? What is the purpose of the society? Who are they composed of? Where do you find them? How do you join them? Why would you join them? What activities or events do they perform? Do you need professional assistance to join them? Do you need an invitation? What free or member benefits are available? Are DNA test results a membershipoption or requirement? \n\n\n\nChristine’s interest in genealogy began in 1977 with the airing of the TV mini-series “Roots”. Her enthusiasm was piqued when she was given a typed pedigree chart\, commissioned by her maternal grandfather\, of their Dutch heritage from the New Netherlands in the 1650’s. Christine is a native Californian\, and a graduate of UCLA in Political Science. She is retired and pursues her genealogy journey full time. Christine is a long-time member of the Whittier Area Genealogical Society (WAGS) and currently is the Program Director. In addition to WAGS\, she is a member of the Tualatin Chapter of the DAR\, the Society of Daughters of Holland Dames\, and the Association of Professional Genealogists. \n\n\n\nJoin us in-person at the Davis Senior Center (646 A St.\, Davis)\, or via Zoom (email us at president@davisgenealogy.org to request a single use guest pass).Refreshments are provided by the club; more are always welcome! The Davis Genealogy Club Library will be open on meeting day from 12:00-1:00pm-Swing by and check it out!Club volunteers are also in the Library every Wednesday between 1:00 and 3:30\, ready to help.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Paper Trail: Restoring Identity Through Genetic Genealogy
DESCRIPTION:What happens when the records go silent? This session dives into the transformative power ofDNA\, showcasing real-world breakthroughs including examples from the Davis Genealogy Club.We will explore how advanced genetic testing can shatter ‘brick walls’ to reclaim the identity oflost ancestors and navigate the complexities of Non-Paternity Events (NPEs). We’ll move beyondthe data to reflect on the impact these discoveries have on the families who finally find their wayhome. \n\n\n\nDavis resident Jonathan W. Long has spent over forty years tracing all of his family lines back through the American colonial era to their immigrant ancestors. He leverages both genetic and traditional genealogical methods to resolve complex lineage puzzles\, and helps coordinate the DavisGenealogy Club’s DNA study group. Since retiring from federal service\, he remains active in ecologicalrestoration efforts in California and Arizona.

SUMMARY:Topic Talk: Letters - Written in the First Person
DESCRIPTION:“Dear ______” transforms into “Dear [Descendant].”  Although addressed to someone else\, our descendants write to tell us…all sorts of things about their lives and the person they wrote to.  What have you found in letters written by or to your ancestors?  And has your understanding of what was written changed over time\, after further research\, upon reflection?  Let’s share\, tell and talk.  Bringing the letters highly encouraged\, if possible\, but not required.  We don’t want to miss anything about the missives. \n\n\n\n~ // ~ \n\n\n\nFor members only. In person at the Davis Senior Center.

SUMMARY:A Land Filled With Horses: The Yanci Ranch by Robyn Rominger
DESCRIPTION:Robyn Rominger’s “A Land Filled With Horses: The Yanci Ranch” is more than a simple account of an animal rescue; it is a personal chronicle affirming the impact of resilience\, collective action\, and unwavering commitment that culminated in the monumental task of saving a large\, abandoned herd of neglected horses on a remote Northern California ranch. The Yanci Ranch horses were found to have rare genetic markers that contributed to important genetic research with human-health implications\, adding an unexpected layer of significance to their rescue. This focus on genetics is an element that elevates the work beyond a typical rescue memoir. \n\n\n\n~ // ~ \n\n\n\nRobyn Rominger grew up in Davis\, California\, and is an author and journalist who has spent more than three decades writing about all aspects of agriculture for publications across the United States. Robyn has a passion for farming\, ranching\, local history\, and horses! Her associated research at the local county archives and regional history centers\, and using online genealogical resources\, has made her a prominent local historian. She enjoys sharing her expertise with others by presenting to different groups. Robyn is married to a fifth-generation Yolo County farmer and lives on the family farm near Winters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us in-person at the Davis Senior Center (646 A St.\, Davis)\, or via Zoom (email us at president@davisgenealogy.org to request a one time guest pass). \n\n\n\nRefreshments are provided by the club; more are always welcome! \n\n\n\nThe Davis Genealogy Club Library will be open on meeting day from 12:00-1:00pm-Swing by and check it out! SUMMARY:DGC Book Club - Unnatural Selection: A Memoir of Adoption and Wilderness by Andrea Ross. Nonfiction 2021
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Ross is a local Davis author \n\n\n\n~ // ~ \n\n\n\nBrown bag lunch 12:30 – Book discussion begins 1:00 in the Genealogy library.~ // ~Adopted at birth\, Andrea Ross grew up inhabiting two ecosystems: one was her tangible\, adoptive family\, the other her birth family\, whose mysterious landscape was hidden from her. In this coming-of-age memoir\, Ross narrates how in her early twenties\, while working as a ranger in Grand Canyon National Park\, she embarked on a journey to discover where she came from and\, ultimately\, who she was. After many missteps and dead ends\, Ross uncovered her heartbreaking and inspiring origin story and began navigating the complicated turns of reuniting with her birth parents and their new families. Through backcountry travel in the American West\, she also came to understand her place in the world\, realizing that her true identity lay not in a choice between adopted or biological parents\, but in an expansion of the concept of family. \n\n\n\n~ // ~ \n\n\n\nTo find a copy of the book\, we recommend a public library\, audible.com\, Amazon\, local bookstores\, eBay\, AddAll.com\, betterworldbooks.com\, thriftbooks.com and other locations for used books. \n\n\n\nDuring the Book Club Meeting\, the next book will be selected. Click here for a list of what’s been suggested and what has already been discussed. Suggestions welcome. Email Suzanne.SPeterson at gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Sharing Your Genealogy with Your Children and Grandchildren by Betty Lemley
DESCRIPTION:The Davis Genealogy Club kicks off the New Year at 1 PM on January 20th with a hybrid meeting & program\, “Sharing Your Genealogy with Your Children and Grandchildren\,” featuring researcher Betty Lemley.  Learn ways to share your family story without writing and publishing a thick book they might not ever read! Or get ideas to put into that book you want to write! Come hear this helpful talk and enjoy the member-provided refreshments following the program.  \n\n\n\nBetty Lemley has loved genealogy/family history since her grandmother introduced her to it when she was a young teenager. Her favorite thing about family history is collecting stories and memories and then sharing them with her children and (20) grandchildren. Armed with a certificate from BYU-Idaho in Family History Research she excels at helping others discover their roots and preserve their family stories.   \n\n\n\nDGC is accepting renewals as well as new memberships now–online or in person! Dues of only $15 per year gives you many benefits all year including: Speaker programs\, Topic Talks\, Book Club discussions\, Weekly Zoom chat for sharing questions and successes\, and the Annual holiday potluck & sharing meeting. We welcome folks at all levels of research experience to join us. Learn all about us by visiting DavisGenealogy.org. We look forward to seeing you!  \n\n\n\nThe Club’s Genealogy Library in the Davis Senior Center is home to over 1\,300 volumes and is open to the public on Wednesdays from 1 – 3:30 p.m. Additionally we’re open one hour before this meeting. Make a plan to visit our volunteers and work on your family tree. You may find a clue that helps you find another generation back! Happy New Year!

SUMMARY:DGC Book Club: The Seven Sisters: Where the Story Begins by Lucinda Riley. 2015. Fiction.
DESCRIPTION:Brown bag lunch 12:30 – Book discussion begins 1:00 Genealogy library \n\n\n\n~ // ~ \n\n\n\nThe Seven Sisters marks the beginning of it all—an epic saga that follows the lives of the D’Aplièse sisters\, each adopted as babies by a mysterious billionaire known to them as Pa Salt. Maia D’Apliese and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home\, “Atlantis” – a fabulous\, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva having been told that their beloved father\, who adopted them all as babies\, has died. Each sister is handed a tantalizing clue to her true heritage-a clue that takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. Once there\, she begins to put together the pieces of her story. Eighty years earlier in the Rio of the 1920s\, Izabela Bonifacio’s father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into the aristocracy. Meanwhile\, architect Heitor da Silva Costa is devising plans for an enormous statue\, to be called Christ the Redeemer\, and will soon travel to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision. Izabela-passionate and longing to see the world— convinces her father to allow her to accompany him and his family to Europe before she is married. There\, at Paul Landowski’s studio and in the heady\, vibrant cafes of Montparnasse\, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly\, and knows at once that her life will never be the same again. SUMMARY:DGC Book Club - “All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley's Sack\, a Black Family Keepsake” By Tiya Miles. 2021. Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Brown bag lunch 12:30 – Book discussion begins 1:00 in the Genealogy library \n\n\n\n~ // ~ \n\n\n\nIn 1850s South Carolina\, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly\, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items\, and\, soon after\, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later\, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare\, haunting language.  Historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women’s faint presence in archival records\, and\, where archives fall short\, she turns to objects\, art\, and the environment to write a singular history of the experience of slavery\, and the uncertain freedom afterward\, in the United States. All That She Carried is a poignant story of resilience and love passed down against steep odds. It honors the creativity and resourcefulness of people who preserved family ties when official systems refused to do so\, and it serves as a visionary illustration of how to reconstruct and recount their stories today.
