Topic Talk – Newspapers

April 12, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Newspapers can be a treasure-trove for genealogy! You can find news, gossip, legal notices, and world events. The announcements of births, engagements, marriages, anniversaries, religious and social events, graduations, military service, illnesses, deaths, and burial might be found in the pages of a newspaper. Legal announcements in newspapers document the sale or purchase of land, administration of an estate, commitment to a mental institution or poor farm, arrests or criminal proceedings and much more. You can read the newspapers your ancestors read, giving you an idea of what was happening in their lifetime. Newspapers can be found in many places—online and in person at local regional repositories.
How do you use newspapers? What sites do you use? Do you pay a fee or use free sites? How do you find local newspapers in the area you are researching? Come to Monday’s Topic Talk to continue this conversation. Our popular Topic Talks (formerly known as Stumbles Back, Steps Forward) are leaderless participatory discussions among Davis Genealogy Club members who have information to share and questions to ask about a particular topic. We can use zoom’s chat feature to share links and advice that can then be gathered and distributed to all members. Looking forward to seeing you there this coming Monday!
